Investigating eye shape and its effect on focusing in people with Down’s syndrome

This project aims to further our understanding of the origin of poor near focusing in Down’s syndrome, by studying the shape and size of different eye structures involved in near focusing in this population.

The research will be conducted at Aston University and will take less than 2 hours. You will be able to take breaks whenever you want during the study.

When you arrive, Flors and/or Fiona (two members of the research team) will meet you and discuss what the research involves, answering any questions you may have. If you are happy to proceed, they will ask you to sign a consent form so we can start the study. Then, Flors and/or Fiona will be measuring how well you can see, your current prescription and your close focusing abilities. All of these will be measured using tests and procedures conducted in a standard eye examination. Finally, the same researchers will take pictures of your eyes using non-invasive and non-contact instruments that are also routinely used to view the internal and external eye during an eye exam.
