Improving Continence for Children and Young People with Neurodisability (ICoN)

The Peninsula Childhood Disability Research Unit (PenCRU) seeks to carry out research that will produce information regarding improving continence, which will be useful and relevant to the lives of families with disabled children. This topic was in the top 10 research priorities list, as voted for by families and clinicians, and the NHS wants to improve continence and toileting services for children and young people with special educational needs and disability aged up to 25 years.

Ms Helen Eke and Dr Chris Morris will head the ICoN study and aim to find out how NHS staff assess and treats children with special educational needs and disabilities with the aim to help them become continent. They will conduct research to evaluate the ways to improve continence for children with special educational needs and disability.

The ICoN team are conducting an online survey about toileting and continence with health professionals, parent/carers, young people and education and social care staff. They need to gather the views and experiences of these people to establish how toileting is managed currently. The results of the survey will help inform health and care services for children in the future.

For further information and to take part in the survey, visit: http://sites.exeter.ac.uk/iconstudy/taking-part/ (survey open until 31 October 2019). Please contact icon@exeter.ac.uk if you have any questions.

This is an exciting opportunity to address an often neglected topic in research, but is central to the daily lives of children and families.
