Exploring the experience of children and young people who have a sibling with intellectual disabilities

Do you have a child with intellectual disabilities? Do they have a brother(s) or sister(s) aged between 11 and 16 years?

This is an invitation for your family to be part of a project exploring the experience of children and young people who have a sibling with intellectual disabilities.

My name is Jackie Kelly and I am a registered learning disability nurse and academic working at the University of Hertfordshire, (UH).

As part of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) I am undertaking a research project, “An Exploratory Study of the Lived Experience of having a Sibling with Intellectual Disabilities”.

My interest stems from my privileged career working with people with intellectual disabilities and their families as a nurse, systemic practitioner and lecturer since 1987.

What would be involved?

Once you contact me, I will provide more information and answer your questions about the project. I will come to meet you. If you are still happy for your family to be involved I will arrange to meet with your child/children who are siblings and ask them some questions about their views and experiences.

I will ask them to keep a blog or diary for a period of time noting their ideas and experiences they feel would be valuable to share to inform other families and professionals about being a sibling.
