Teenager ‘surprised and happy’ at card from First Minister

A teenager from South Wales has received a very special birthday card and letter, from the First Minister of Wales himself. Morgan Lewis said he was “Surprised and happy” to have received the correspondence from Mark Drakeford for his 16th birthday.

Morgan’s mum Amanda said: “Because last year’s birthday was in lockdown, I asked Facebook friends to send Morgan a birthday card. He ended up with 170! He commented though that he hadn’t had one from Mark Drakeford. When Morgan has enjoyed doing something, he likes for it to be repeated! So this year, I asked friends to again send cards. He’s received 63 so far and expecting a few more.”

Amanda also contacted Mr Drakeford’s office to see if the First Minister would send a card. She was pleased when they received a card and letter in the post.

“I know Mr Drakeford is a very busy man, so I was most appreciative that he took the time to not only send a card, but to write a personal letter to Morgan too.”

The past year has been difficult for Morgan, as it has everybody else as normal life has been put on hold. But, seeing Mr Drakeford on television delivering his speeches to the nation made him ‘a part of our lives’ in Morgan’s eyes.

“I tried my best to give Morgan an understanding of why we were in lockdown, and how the numbers going up or down affected whether he went to school or stayed home. Every day he asks me what the figures are for Rhondda Cynon Taff, Caerphilly, Cardiff and Merthyr. He’s able to understand when the figures go up is a negative, and when they go down it’s a positive. Morgan watched the lunch time updates with me, even reminding me it was time to put the tv on.”

The DSA would also like to wish Morgan a very happy 16th birthday!
