Free running – my interesting (and adventurous) hobby!

This is a guest blog from Aaron. He’s 14 and has a rather interesting hobby – free running! We’ll let him tell you about it…

So what is free running?

It is basically trying to get from A to B in the quickest way, and involves climbing, jumping and running. I love watching parkour videos on YouTube. I got a ‘like’ for one of my videos from a really cool free runner called Schlappen who said “Nice work dude, keep it up!!!”

How did you get in to free running?

I saw some videos on YouTube and thought I would try it.

Isn’t it scary jumping off things?

Not one bit – thankfully I know my limits!!

Where’s the best place you have ever done free running?

I love free running when I’m on holiday – then I can jump into the swimming pool at the end and cool off!

Why do you love it so much?

I just love climbing and jumping – if there’s a roundabout way to get somewhere which involves lots of obstacles, I’ll take it!

Do you do any other sports?

I am currently a member of Salto Special Olympics Club and we train every Wednesday. I do the vault, floor routines, rings and uneven bars. I used to be a member of British Gymnastics and completed my certificates from number 8 to number 2.

I am also a member of a group called Dramability, a mixed ability drama group based in Downpatrick. Recently, our school drama group performed at the Metropolitan Arts Centre in Belfast – the performance was Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’, as part of the Shakespeare Schools Festival.

What would you say to someone else who is interested in taking up free running?

Just go for it – what’s the worst that can happen!!

Thanks for telling us about your hobby, Aaron. It sounds very exciting!
