Land’s End to John O’Groats – how a ‘crazy idea’ became a reality

The Down’s Syndrome Association (DSA) would like to thank the self-named, ‘Four middle-aged blokes on bikes’ for raising more than £8,000 when they look on the legendary Land’s End to John O’Groats cycle challenge in June.

Nick Lyth, Steve Hawksworth, Paul Lomas and Wayne Burgreave all completed the 940 miles, climbing 45,000ft over 11 days. The group regularly ride in the Peak District, but this is the first time they’ve taken on such a challenge, with Nick admitting it was just a ‘crazy’ off-the-cuff comment at the start, before everyone agreed to make it a reality.

The group decided to take on the challenge for the DSA as Nick’s son Harry has Down’s syndrome.

We have been fortunate enough to have our son, Harry, in our lives for the past 24 years. He has Down’s syndrome. However, he never lets this hold him back and he participates in everything he possibly can do. The Down’s Syndrome Association have been very helpful and supportive, particularly in the early days when, as a new parent, you’re trying to get your head around how to do the best for Harry.
