Open Day at the Paddocks

A couple of year’s ago, Graham raised some money for the DSA by allowing the public to visit his gardens which he looks after with the help of seven adults with learning disabilities. This year he decided to do the same thing again and has written a piece about the event for us…

We opened our gardens and small-holding in Weybread to the general public on Saturday July 28th with the aim of showing everyone who came the great achievements and hard work of our family with learning disabilities.

Visitors were amazed at how much was going on and being achieved, from the quantities and varied amounts of fruit and vegetables being grown to the way we integrate it all with our natural surroundings. Not only is our small-holding productive but we also have our very own nature reserve and recycle as much as we can. We sell our excess fruit and veg all year round in our “Carrot Shed” by our back gate next to the Church.

We raised the magnificent amount of £710 for the Down’s Syndrome Association but to me, the most important part of the day was seeing the pride on the family’s faces, whether they were showing people around, taking money at the gate, serving tea and cake or being the car park attendant.

This year we also offered our guests a ploughman’s lunch made from our own produce, (we had to buy the cheese and Baguette), and delicious homemade ice-cream.

Thank you for your support.

Sounds like a great day, Graham. Thank you all for your continued support!
