Down2Earth – June Meeting

It was great to see everyone at Down2Earth this Sunday, we started the session by sharing our news. All of our members shared interesting things they had been doing such as going on holiday, going out for a meal and going to their favourite clubs and activities.

The theme for this month’s meeting was social skills, where our members would be testing out some new resources and sharing their thoughts.

We started by talking about some examples of good social skills such as;

  • listening
  • sharing
  • taking turns
  • not interrupting

We then talked about some examples of things that may be unkind, such as;

  • Name calling
  • Ignoring
  • Talking over others

We talked about how it might make us feel when we are being ignored, members of the group said it would make them feel sad. A few members of the group also said that they did not like it when people went on their phone whilst they were talking.

The group then tested out the second activity. Members worked in small groups, each group were given four pieces of paper with a different type of greeting on each one, these were:

  • Hugs
  • Kisses
  • Waves and smiles
  • Handshakes

Each group was also given pictures of different people, such as:

  • Family
  • Friends
  • Support worker
  • Postman
  • Boyfriends and girlfriends

Each group had to place the pictures of different people on the greeting they thought was the most appropriate. Nearly all of our members said that they would wave, and smile at the postman and that they would shake hands with a teacher or support worker. Some members agreed that hugs and kisses were for friends, family and boyfriends and girlfriends. Other group members said that they preferred waves and smiles for everyone!
