Meet Sam…3D digital fashion designer

21 February 2022

Sam’s clothing design career started with a BTEC in Textiles. During 2020 he learnt how to use special fashion design software that allowed him to further develop his virtual design skillsets.

In 2021 he was featured in a virtual fashion week.

Sam’s is now Artist in Residence and a Virtual Sample Maker with an international company called Modern Mirror.

Modern Mirror received support from our WorkFit programme before employing Sam.

Simon, one of our Employment Development Officers, worked with Sam and his family alongside Modern Mirror to help make the role a success.

Jess, Sam’s sister, says: ‘We are very grateful for Simon and his passion for the role and for WorkFit. His knowledge and support really helped to reassure Jill (Sam’s mum) that this was a transition that could work and helped Modern Mirror ensure that Sam was supported properly.’

We asked Sam some questions about working at Modern Mirror:

What do you like best about your job?

I am really happy and I love working with my team mates and I enjoy my two managers Nicole and Emmy because they are really beautiful and nice and wonderful. I love working as a team.

What have you learnt since you started your new job?

I did learn how to use Outlook, Slack, Zoom and Adobe illustrator and how to message my colleagues and check my diary for meetings. I have learnt all about NFTs, a Non fungible token and I have got a theme that I am working from too.

What is the best thing about working for The Modern Mirror?

I am really excited and so happy in my job. The best thing of Modern mirror is typing lovely messages to my colleagues and being in the team. I am also included in lots of discussions and my creative work is being used for big project.

What are you work ambitions?

My work and career ambitions are to be fashion designer and virtual sample maker and have a brand with my sister Jessie.

Today is a very special day really for Sam.

Today, as part of London Fashion Week, Modern Mirror are launching their first NFT project called Limitless – Fallen Angel . It is a collaboration between Sam and bionic pop artist, muse and futurist Viktoria Modesta.

You can hear all about the project and from Sam in this video:

Emmy, from Modern Mirror, has answered a few questions about working with Sam:

Tell us more about this specific project.

The Limetless NFT is a collaborative art project sponsored by Modern Mirror with Sam Goodyear’s garment design as the focus. When it was suggested that we bring Viktoria Modesta into this project, Sam was very inspired by her style and immediately began designing garments in line with her aesthetic. The group and Sam selected one of these styles to move forward with, and Sam refined that design further with input from Viktoria. The final project was assembled and animated by other members of our team and has come together beautifully as our first NFT.

What have you as an organization learnt since working with Sam?

I think we have all been influenced by the wonderful positivity Sam has brought to the team. His cheerful demeanor is contagious. He is so creative, has so many new ideas, and yet is very happy to respond to suggestions when collaborating.

What have the challenges been and how did you approach them and hopefully overcome them?

Honestly, I can’t think of any real challenges so far. There have been a few technical difficulties when we have zoom meetings, but we are fortunate to have Sam’s sister Jess to help him sort those out.

A portion of the net proceeds from the Limitless NFT auction will be donated to support the work of WorkFit. We’re very grateful to Sam, his family, Viktoria and Modern Mirror for their support.
