Megan – Gabbie’s Big Sister
So, where do I start? Just over 18 years ago I became a big sister to a very special little girl. To this day I would say it was one of the best days of my life. I was always into babies, playing mums and dads and then suddenly I had my own real-life baby. When Gabbie was born, things were slightly different to what we had expected, Gabbie was diagnosed with triso my 21. Gabbie was different but aren’t we all?! This made no difference to the love we had for her in fact, she was just that little bit more special to us all (and still is). It also means she can be that little bit cheekier and get away with it!

As a big sister, I can’t imagine life without Gabbie now–I don’t know what I’d do without her. 18 years later she’s grown into the most amazing young lady. She’s become my best friend. We sit in bed and talk about our days, have girly days out and we get the hump with each other. She really is the most caring, loving, kind, stubborn and funny girl. She has achieved so much and done so many things that society is telling us that children with Down’s syndrome will ‘never be able to do’. She went to mainstream primary school, a secondary school for educational needs – which she excelled at – and she is now studying at college.

She lives her life to the max and has an amazing social life – better than any of her family! She plays netball, rugby, golf, swims and is in the athletics team. She also has a weekly girl’s night with her friends. She is the happiest lady ever and her life is a million miles away from what society portrays. We need to get rid of these outdated opinions and negative images the internet likes to show. She has taught us all so much, me especially. She’s a normal young lady who wants to have the best life and she absolutely can if we give her the opportunity. She has so much to look forward to in the future and I will always do anything I can to help because that’s what she deserves. I have faith in her getting herself a job and living on her own (although I’ll try and get her to live with me). Gabbie is my absolute favourite human, so pure. I am so proud to be her big sis.
