Little Westbourne Nursery in Penarth held a sponsored bounce last week to celebrate Down’s syndrome Awareness Week and World Down Syndrome Day and to raise money for the DSA. When we heard how much money they had raised we sent them some DSA tshirts and their own #LotsofSocks.
Hannah, a member of the nursery staff, let us know how the event went….
The children (and the staff) were all so very excited for their special tops and socks, we cannot thank you enough. They all chose the colours they loved and wore them all day. I can say some of the tshirts weren’t as white as they began.
The reason we chose to raise money for the DSA was due to a very special little girl in our nursery…. Effie.
Effie is so full of personality and overcomes every barrier and battle which comes her way. She is such a happy little girl who makes all the staff and children smile, whether it’s her funny little ways, her sassy attitude or just her loving nature! We are all so pleased to have raised such a big amount of money for a very worthy charity to support other families with children with Down Syndrome.
Effie’s mum also kindly wrote a few words to tell us more about her daughter:
Effie made her arrival back in 2016 and has kept us on our toes ever since.
When she was born we were so excited to find out that we had a little girl, a little sister for her brother Finn. This feeling of excitement was soon replaced with worry and fear when we found out she had Down’s Syndrome, a serious heart condition and would need open heart surgery as soon as she was big enough. We were blindsided, but could already see that she was a little fighter!
She was always and still is full of strength and determination, with a little bit of stubbornness thrown in! She has overcome every challenge in her path. Her latest achievement is that that she has learnt to walk during Lockdown! Effie has been part of Little Westbourne Nursery since she was 2 years old and so much of her success has been down to the fantastic team that support her. Her key worker, Hannah recently organised a sponsored bounce, in order to raise money for the DSA. This was amazing for us, to know that the cause meant as much to them as it did us, but also that we knew Effie could join in and bounce away with her friends! She absolutley loved it, as I am sure all of the children, and staff did!
We are absolutely blown away by the kindness and generosity of the people who donated. Little Westbourne has done a fantastic job to raise so much money. Effie is like a little ray of sunshine in our lives and I know that she is a very well loved member of the nursery too!
