Schooling our 6 year old ‘on the road’

We recently received an email from the Cook family, who have packed up their life in Worcester and are spending a year travelling around Europe and beyond, in a motorhome.

Julia Cook and her husband Tim wanted to give their children William, aged 8, and Elizabeth (Lizzy), aged 6, the opportunity to see the world from a young age.

They’ve been travelling in their motorhome, affectionately named ‘Gilbert’ for nine months now. They’ve been to three continents, visited 14 countries and driven more than 18k kilometres… and counting.

We asked Lizzy about the trip…

What do you like about travelling around the world in Gilbert?
The best thing about travelling is going to lots of new and exciting places and being able to park where ever we like (within reason). I love going to new playgrounds in different counties we’ve been to, the best one was in Spain with a giant tube slide.

What’s the best place you have been to so far?
Morocco was brilliant, we went to the Sahara Desert and went camel trekking across the sand dunes. I also love the beach and playing in the sea as long as it’s not too cold!

What are your hobbies and interests?
I love drawing and painting, my favourite colour is black! I have also learnt to ride my bike without stabilisers while we’ve been travelling, I just need help starting but I’m practicing with my Dad. I really like stories and enjoy listening and reading books especially when we’re travelling.

Julia tell us the motto of their trip has become ‘I CAN’.

We’ve all faced different challenges and the kids are starting to realise that they can do nearly anything, if they just tell themselves that they can, and give it a go. That’s how we got here in the first place!

We’ve been road-schooling the kids and are also supporting Lizzy with her speech and language. However, they’re getting a much wider education through the amazing people we’ve met, the experiences we’ve had and the beautiful places we’ve been.
