Matthew’s lockdown cycling challenge

Written by Mary and Wally Chapman

I thought I would write to you to tell you about our son Matthew who was 30 in June.

During the third lockdown Matthew raised more than £2,500 for two of his day groups whose finances were suffering due to Covid.

Matthew is a fit and healthy young man who loves swimming and going to the gym. We decided to challenge him to a sponsored cycle on his exercise bike on the 28 of March and he cycled over 44km, the equivalent to cycling from Hornchurch in Havering, to Southend-on-Sea. He trained every other day during March and completed his challenge successfully over four half-hour periods.

He was always enthusiastic to train and never once grumbled. During each training session he was accompanied by his favourite groups, the Spice Girls, Atomic Kitten, and Steps to name but a few.

He is an amazing young man who always has a smile on his handsome face. We are so very proud of our son and he is proof that our young people can achieve so much.
