What facilitates a positive education for learners with Down syndrome in a mainstream setting?

This research aims to find out what learners with Down syndrome found positive in their education. This can be experiences from any type of school they went to, including mainstream schools, special schools and colleges. This information will be used to find themes and to understand how these experiences can be facilitated in mainstream settings.

This research will use the voice of the young person with Down syndrome. This is a really under researched area as most research uses the views of the parents/guardians or teachers.

This will involve semi-structured interviews. These will be face-to-face in a place the young person feels confident. The researcher will travel to the young person. Questions will be adapted to the needs of the young person. A very person-centered approach will be used.

To take part, the young person must be post-16 and have Down syndrome. They must have gone to a mainstream school for some of their education, even if this was for a very short time. It doesn’t matter if they can’t remember much about this, as they can talk about any part of their education and any setting they have attended.
