The mental wellbeing of family carers of young people with learning disabilities during the transition period: The role of uncertainty

The transition period from childhood to adulthood for young people with learning disabilities and their families is recognised as a time of change and uncertainty. Despite this, little research has explored what uncertainties exist for family carers during this time, how family carers feel when faced with difficult decisions and how they manage through this period of transition. It is therefore important to better understand the experiences and mental wellbeing of family carers’ during this time of transition.

Participation in this research involves completing an online questionnaire, which may take up to 30 minutes to complete.

The questionnaire asks about you, and your family member you care for, it asks about your experiences of uncertain situations and how you have felt and responded in relation to the situation. You will also be asked questions about how you feel generally.

About the researcher

Michaela Osborne, Principal Researcher and Trainee Clinical Psychologist.

I am passionate about improving access to support for family carers, particularly family carers of people with learning disabilities due to my own family experience. I hope that this research will be a first step to developing psychological support for family carers in their own right.
