Statement on the sentencing of Dami Tobi Ayan

6 April 2023

Ayan was a staff member at Cawston Hall, the long stay private hospital (now closed) where three adults who had learning disabilities tragically died.

During the course of the investigations into those deaths, Ayan’s appalling behaviour was revealed. He was seen on CCTV striking Ben King, a young man who had Down’s syndrome. Ben later died from unrelated causes.

We are pleased that Ayan has been given a custodial sentence, but we feel that the length of time he will serve does not properly reflect the shocking cruelty of his crime against Ben, an extremely vulnerable young man in his care.

It is vital that the Government, the NHS and the agencies responsible for inspecting and ensuring the quality of care, must continue to work together to prevent this sort of incident ever occurring again in the future.
