Janet Carr

I am really sad to announce the death of Dr Janet Carr who died on the 17 March.

Janet had been associated  with the DSA for a very long time and her pioneering work made an enormous difference to thousands of people with Down’s syndrome not only in the UK but worldwide.

Janet was one of the early pioneers in psychology research, carrying out longitudinal studies with the same cohort of people for more than fifty years. This remarkable achievement ultimately led to a much greater understanding of the condition and how, with the right support and encouragement, all children with Down’s syndrome could learn alongside their peers.

Janet was behaviour adviser to the DSA and her specialist knowledge on behaviour was a lifeline for a lot of our families.  Janet’s kind and gentle manner, together with her common sense approach, immediately put parents at ease at times of great stress. Janet went out of her way to make sure that she contacted everyone personally and always  gave generously of her time and expertise.

Janet will be greatly missed but she leaves behind a very powerful legacy.
