One of the newest elements of the DSActive programme is our offer of coach education workshops to National Governing Bodies who want to support more people with Down’s syndrome to participate in the sport they administer. This is a really exciting development for the DSActive programme and World Disability Billiards and Snooker (WDBS) were the first organisation to receive this workshop.
The workshop is designed to educate coaches and administrators how to support people with Down’s syndrome in their sport. It provides information on Down’s syndrome, additional health conditions which might affect participation in sport, learning profile, behaviour and how best to adapt the session to suit the varying needs of people with Down’s syndrome.
The workshop was well received by everyone from WDBS, with one participate commenting:
“I’ve been attending workshops and lectures for 40 years and I have never learnt as much as I did in that workshop.”
The day after the workshop, WDBS, World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) and DSActive hosted a joint disability snooker open day. Players from the Stockport area arrived at Hazel Grove Snooker Club to try out snooker, get some coaching and play some practice matches.
DSActive Project Manager Alex said:
“It was great to see so many people coming along and trying snooker. We have children coming from local schools to try snooker for the first time, and we had experienced players coming along to get some extra practice and coaching. Snooker is such an inclusive sport and it was great to see some many people here today trying out.”
