BMJ report finds more evidence of vulnerability to Covid-19

A new study in the British Medical Journal has provided more evidence to show that people who have Down’s syndrome are much more vulnerable to Covid-19 than people who do not have Down’s syndrome. It says discrimination, exclusion and living in residential care homes probably added to the risk of Covid-19 for those with learning disabilities, while people who have Down’s syndrome may have additional biological risks.

The findings also highlight gaps in the learning disability register. It is vital everyone with Down’s syndrome is registered so that reasonable adjustments can be put in place to make sure they get the right healthcare when they need it.

We have worked closely with researchers, here in the UK and globally to swiftly share information that will keep people safe, including Easy Read resources. We are currently pressing the JCVI to recommend that young people aged 12-15 who have Down’s syndrome will also be vaccinated and await any announcement with anticipation.
