Local company helps Teddington light up Christmas!

  • Thursday, 04 December 2008 10:14

Teddington based Hitachi Consulting gave their all for charity last week, as their staff helped the Down's Syndrome Association (DSA) at the switching on of Teddington's Christmas lights.

Two of Hitachi's employees, Peter Sans and Lorna Barnes, joined ex-Doctor Who Peter Davison and Olympic rowing star Andy Hodge at Teddington's annual lights countdown on Thursday 27th November.

The pair then took to the streets to help collect funds for the DSA, raising a total of £180.53 in just two hours.

Richard Goodson, Vice President of Hitachi Consulting said: "I'm very proud of Peter and Lorna who braved the streets of Teddington to help raise money for people with Down's syndrome. Peter and Lorna work long hours but still come out to give something back to the community. I'm looking forward to doing more events like this with the Down's Syndrome Association in 2009."

Hitachi Consulting has been giving pro-bono support to the DSA since June this year. Since then Hitachi staff have helped with life skills training for people with Down's syndrome, as well as fundraising and IT support.

Births with Down's syndrome increase

  • Monday, 24 November 2008 10:06

The number of babies in England and Wales being born with Down's syndrome has risen to a higher level than in 1989 when serum pre-natal screening was widely introduced - with two births a day according to the latest figures.

And in an attempt to understand why more women are opting to go ahead with their pregnancies the Down's Syndrome Association has consulted parent members. The results, released in a Radio 4 documentary, "Born with Down's Syndrome", show that many believe the quality of life for people with Down's syndrome will be better than in the past and that those with Down's syndrome are more accepted in society.

Response to research about pre-natal screening

  • Wednesday, 17 September 2008 00:00

Down's Syndrome Association responds to research suggesting for every three unborn babies with Down's syndrome prevented from being born, two healthy babies will be miscarried.

Carol Boys, chief executive of the Down's Syndrome Association, said:

"The Down's Syndrome Association is saddened to hear about the number of healthy babies potentially lost through prenatal screening. Losing any baby is terribly upsetting for parents, regardless of whether it is disabled or not.

"However, we have some concerns about the scientific basis of the research and feel that the focus on the number of unaffected babies lost in the diagnostic process is unhelpful to the wider social debate on screening for genetic disorders such as Down's syndrome."
