Institute of Psychiatry research links molecule with learning disability

Researchers at the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London have found that the brains of people with Down's syndrome have an increased level of the molecule myo-inositol. An increased level of the molecule is associated with reduced intellectual ability. The Institute is now going on to research whether the levels of the molecule in the brain can be reduced.

The Down's Syndrome Association welcomes any research that may have a beneficial effect on the lives of people with Down's syndrome.

DSA responds to Wendolyn Markcrow sentence

In response to the news that Wendolyn Markcrow has received a suspended sentence, Carol Boys, Chief Executive of the Down's Syndrome Association says:

"In our own experience of talking to families who have children with more complex needs, including a dual diagnosis of Down's syndrome and autistic spectrum disorder, it often seems that they struggle to get appropriate or adequate support. This can leave those families feeling extremely isolated and with unacceptable levels of stress.

Down's Syndrome Awareness Week 6 - 12 June

Down's Syndrome Awareness Week will be 6 - 12 June this year. The campaign, that aims to raise awareness of the condition, dispel common myths and allay fears, is a national initiative pioneered by the Down's Syndrome Association.

There are a variety of events organised for all over the country including fundraising events as well as events focused on educating people about Down's syndrome.

Makro adopt Down's Syndrome Association as their charity of the year

Wholesale giant, Makro UK, has recently announced its adoption of the Down's Syndrome Association as its Charity of the Year 2005.

Makro hopes to raise £100,000 for the charity that champions the rights of people with Down's Syndrome in the United Kingdom. This figure is hoped to be achieved through a combination of Makro employees' own fundraising and matching by the company.

Helping people with Down's syndrome in Gobi Desert challenge

Martin Palethorpe from Egham, Surrey will take on the challenge of a lifetime in April as he runs a 150 mile marathon in six days across the Gobi Desert in China to raise £10,000 for the Down's Syndrome Association.

Martin will be running carrying all of his clothing, food, medical kit and sleeping bag in a backpack weighing 12-14kg during the six-day ultra marathon that will take him along parts of the Silk Road and the Great Wall of China. If this wasn't gruelling enough the challenge will take place in a combination of unforgiving dry and mountainous rocky terrain and sandy desert. Temperatures will vary from 30 degrees Centigrade during the day to below freezing at night.

Liam Neeson pledges support for Down's Syndrome Association charity ball

Liam Neeson, international film star and patron of the Down's Syndrome Association is keen to encourage people to support the national charity by attending their fundraising ball on 19 February.

‘A Night at the Oscars' Ball, which is sponsored by Philips, is being held at the Sheraton Park Lane Hotel in Piccadilly, London on 19 February at 7pm and promises to be a glittering evening of Hollywood glamour.

However there is another very important reason for attending the event above the glitz, glamour and celebrity guests and that is raising vital funds for the Down's Syndrome Association.
