‘Education Support Pack' wins national award for excellence

Today, the Down's Syndrome Association's ‘Education Support Pack for mainstream schools' was named winner of the ‘Books for Learning and Teaching Award' at the NASEN (National Association for Special Educational Needs) and TES (Times Educational Supplement) national conference.

The Pack, launched last year, aims to provide practical help for mainstream schools which include children with Down's syndrome.

Patron Damon Hill announces DSA office move

Damon Hill - who is patron of the Down's Syndrome Association and has a son with the condition - has handed the charity a £10,000 cheque, money his band ‘The Six Pistons' raised by playing at various motor sport events. The donation will help fund an essential national office move being announced today.

The Down's Syndrome Association is moving from its current offices in Tooting, South London, to join the Strathcona Theatre Company at the historic Grade II Langdon Down Theatre, currently being refurbished as part of a development of 190 apartments and townhouses by Laing Homes Thames Valley.

Public ignorance is the biggest handicap for people with Down's syndrome

Supporters countrywide are gearing up for Down's Syndrome Awareness Week (2-8 June), as an NOP survey* reveals wide-spread and serious misconceptions about the condition throughout all regions of the UK.

Hundreds of events across the country from quizzes to tea parties are being organised by supporters including staff at Dixons group stores to raise funds and to improve understanding of the ability of people with Down's syndrome to "live life to the full" (regional event details available). As part of an eighteen month partnership, Dixons, Curry's, PC World and The Link stores are also selling lapel pins to raise funds for the Down's Syndrome Association.

An NOP survey to mark Down's Syndrome Awareness Week revealed that the majority of the UK population significantly underestimated the ability of people with Down's syndrome to ‘live life to the full' - the theme for this year's Awareness Week activities. The survey results reveal a serious barrier to inclusion for people with Down's syndrome.

Government applauds new initiative to aid inclusion in mainstream school

Today, the Down's Syndrome Association launched its Education Support Pack, a comprehensive and practical resource for mainstream schools that are including - or thinking of including - children with Down's syndrome.

The Pack is launched in the wake of new laws that strengthen the right of all disabled children to be included in mainstream school. However, many schools plead that they lack the time, specialist knowledge and materials to make inclusion work for children with disabilities such as Down's syndrome.
