Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) Review
An independent review has been established by the Department for Children, Schools and Families and the Department of Health to examine recent progress towards improving services for children and young people at risk of and experiencing mental-health problems, and to make practical recommendations to improve further.
The review team asked for the views on the current performance of services, and what can be done to better meet the needs of children and young people who need to access them.
Our response to the call for evidence is based on the experiences that our members have reported to the Association.
There are 3 major areas of difficulties:
a) whilst generic local services are often available, specialist help for people with learning disabilities is not
b) some people with Down's syndrome are not being offered appropriate mental health assessments;
c) those who are assessed and then diagnosed with mental health difficulties are not being offered the most appropriate routine treatment.
